This year, the RCA SU Sabbatical Officers have been hard at work to make the RCA community an even better place to study and create. Your President & Vice President have been spearheading exciting projects that we're thrilled to share with you.
White City Care
One of the central points of Adriana's manifesto was campus equality, with a particular focus on White City. Following successful events celebrating Diwali and the Lunar New Year, she and the SU have embarked on a new project to create a mural in White City. The project was assigned to Tamar Ben Joya, following a selection process led by members of the School of Communication and the SU. We can't wait to see the finished result!
Student Led Exhibitions
Meanwhile, Vice-President Mary Pedicini, who comes from the School of Arts and Humanities (MA Sculpture), has been advocating for student-led shows so that students have more opportunities to exhibit their work during the year. Mary noticed that, in an art college, there was no real option for students to showcase their work outside of final shows. So, she worked tirelessly to strike a deal with the college and make it possible for students to exhibit in gallery spaces on campus. Starting next year, there will be a clear open call process by which all students can submit proposals for exhibitions at the start of terms 1 & 2.
Previous show
This year, we have four trial shows to figure out the system and iron out any kinks. In March, we put on the show "Unfolding Traces," a group exhibition featuring students from Print, CAP, Painting, Sculpture and Ceramics & Glass.
Upcoming Shows
And we have two more exciting shows on the horizon! First up, led by the 2030 collective, "2030" will run from 19 May to 25 May in the Hangar Gallery. Then, led by Caspar Danuser & Nikki Ramírez (MA2 Curating students), "Love Ethics" will follow from 26 May to 1 June, also in the Hangar Gallery.
We are also in negotiations with the college for one more exhibition by SustainLab.
We're excited about all of these projects, which will contribute to the vibrant and inclusive community at RCA. We hope to see you at the exhibitions and other events happening around campus.
Best regards,
The RCA SU
